“James Murdoch Was Just Scared”

Rolling Stone Co-Founder Jann Wenner says Magazines’ Rush to iPad Is ‘Sheer Insanity and Insecurity and Fear’. Successful Migration to Tablet Editions Will Take ‘Decades,’ he said in an interview with AdAge.
“Be attuned. Get ready to make the moves. Be adept at moving quickly to the changes. But to rush to throw away your magazine business and move it on the iPad is just sheer insanity and insecurity and fear. And because it coincided with the ad recession, they conflated the two events until they themselves believed that magazines are …

Alaska Airlines Uses iPads For Flight Manuals

“The iPad has already gotten the go-ahead from the FAA as a replacement for paper flight charts and maps, and now Alaska Airlines has become the first major US airline to hop on board the paperless bandwagon. While it’s not quite ready to ditch paper navigation charts just yet (though that is under consideration), the airline has announced that it will be replacing its traditional flight manuals with iPads, which will be loaded up with the GoodReader app and PDFs of 41 different manuals and other materials. ”

Apple’s Brand Now More Valuable Than Google’s

Apple is now the world’s most valuable brand.
Via Statspotting:
“Apple is now the hottest property in terms of consumer goodwill, earning an estimated valuation of $153.3 billion and leading a pack that includes the likes of Coca-Cola, BMW, HSBC, and Disney. The tech sector had a very strong year as a whole, with Facebook’s brand improving in value by a staggering 246 percent (to $19.1b) and Amazon becoming the world’s most valuable retailer (at $37.6b) in spite of having no actual stores. Sadly, there were some downers too, as Nintendo …

Apple: “We’ve sold every iPad we could make”

From Apple’s Q2 results conf call:
““Demand for the iPad has been staggering,” Apple COO Tim Cook told analysts, “and we’re heavily backlogged. We’ve sold every one we could make.”
Cook said he could not predict when the company would be able to have enough iPad 2 inventory to meet demand, bringing supply and demand closer to equilibrium. (Right now, it’s seriously out of whack. Cook called it “the mother of all backlogs.”)”

Apple Is Recording Your Moves

Alasdair Allen writes: “Today at Where 2.0 Pete Warden and I will announce the discovery that your iPhone, and your 3G iPad, is regularly recording the position of your device into a hidden file. Ever since iOS 4 arrived, your device has been storing a long list of locations and time stamps. We’re not sure why Apple is gathering this data, but it’s clearly intentional, as the database is being restored across backups, and even device migrations.”

iPad2 Gets Glasses-Free 3D

TUAW has a report on a tech demo called Head-Coupled Perspective, which is a 3D representation on the 2D screen that moves when you do.
Like looking through a small window, the dynamically adapting 3D effect is pretty convincing, at least on camera, and it’s not just the iPad 2 that can get in on the action; the iPhone 4 can be kitted out, too. Considering that all you need is a front-facing camera, something that every Apple device capable of running apps already comes packing, we could see …

Come Saturday, No More iPads In Stock

Fortune is reporting that the world will soon run out of stock of iPad2s.
“Reports are still drifting in, but it seems likely that most of the 25 countries where Apple (AAPL) launched the iPad 2 on Friday had run out of product by Saturday afternoon.
Pocket-lint reports that the two flagship Apple Stores in London — Regent Street and Covent Garden — are completely out of stock and won’t be getting more before Monday. Checks by Electronista and The Province with several Canadian Apple Stores found the same. A shopper …
