FaceTime coming to the iPad

BGR has a report on the arrival of FaceTime video calling to the iPad and iPod touch devices.
“It’s actually pretty simple… Your Apple ID will be registered with your device/s, and that will allow other Apple devices to start a FaceTime call using your email address. Apple will also reportedly make use of push notifications to deliver these incoming FaceTime connection requests as we have been informed there is a push notification detector tied into the FaceTime frameworks in the new iPhone OS 4.1 beta.”

“Yes, Fraud occurred on iTunes”

Apple today vaguely confirmed that fraud indeed happened on iTunes store. Engadget got this response:
“The developer Thuat Nguyen and his apps were removed from the App Store for violating the developer Program License Agreement, including fraudulent purchase patterns.
Developers do not receive any iTunes confidential customer data when an app is downloaded.
If your credit card or iTunes password is stolen and used on iTunes we recommend that you contact your financial institution and inquire about canceling the card and issuing a chargeback for any unauthorized transactions. We also recommend …

Reading Speeds: ‘Books Faster Than Tablets’

useit.com conducted a study of people reading long-form text on tablets finds higher reading speeds than in the past, but they’re still slower than reading print.
The iPad measured at 6.2% lower reading speed than the printed book, whereas the Kindle measured at 10.7% slower than print. However, the difference between the two devices was not statistically significant because of the data’s fairly high variability.
Thus, the only fair conclusion is that we can’t say for sure which device offers the fastest reading speed. In any case, the difference would be so …

iPad to get iOS 4 by November?

Appadvice picks up a signal from an iAds message from Apple:
“Apple is telling marketers that the device considered most promising for advertisers — the iPad — won’t be on the iAd platform until November. Since we know iAd is built right into iOS 4, this looks like a pretty compelling first hint at when it will finally be available on the iPad. As you might remember, the only thing Jobs has revealed so far about iOS 4 availability on the iPad was ” this fall”.”

Digital Gyro on the iPad?

InformationWeek reports that an empty slot on the iPad could actually be for the digital gyroscop, based on a teardown by UBM TechInsights.
TechInsight’s senior analyst Steve Bitton speculated that the iPad will likely get the gyroscope for a number of reasons. First, the presence of the slot (see images) leads to the obvious conclusion. Moreover, the accelerometer and gyro would likely work together, as well as with the application processor (the processor right above those other two components). Thus having all closely co-located makes sense.

iPad: In-Flight Entertainment Device

“Despite criticism of the iPad (the odd choice of name, lack of functionality, awkward size) anyone who has held one in their hands can attest to its all-around awesomeness. Whether it’s because it makes us feel like the future is now, or that we’re on the top of the technological food chain, there’s just something special about the iPad. And it wasn’t long before the travel industry realized its potential.
According to a recent press release from Jetstar, Qantas Airline’s low-budget counterpart, the airline is already looking to make the iPad available …

How the iPad Will Change Education

OnlineColleges.net has a very neat summary of the potential of the iPad in the education sector.
The iPad is still a novelty in the tech world and especially in education, where it’s being used experimentally as a content delivery and even as a content creation tool. If you’re an online college student, you’re already familiar with many digital tools and applications that help you connect to the greater academic community and your fellow online students, but the iPad may herald the future of the “tablet classroom,” even for elementary-aged students.
